5 Steps to an Affordable Production

  • 1 - Develop the Script

    The director in conjunction with the client and copywriter will devise a shooting script even if the commercial has no dialogue. This script will act as a reference for everyone working on the commercial project, and ensure that everyone on the set is pursuing the same creative goals for the piece.

  • 2 - Scout Location

    A shooting script will detail the shots, camera moves, dialogue, captions and any voice-over copy that will be featured in the commercial. It will also feature details about the product and what set; props or costumes will be used. Specifying how and where props could be obtained depends solely on what the commercial is advertising, but there are prop storage and costume rental facilities in most Canadian cities, to provide for film and commercial production.

  • 3- Shoot the Project

    The commercial director will schedule the crew and actors for however many days are required to film the commercial or corporate project. He or she will give direction to the talent and directing the crew on the set. Most television commercials will usually take less than a week to shoot.

  • 4- Edit the Footage

    The director will hire an editor to cut the footage. The editor will select all the tapes from the shoot and assemble them for the commercial or corporate project.
    Also, the editor may cut several versions of the commercial, each at a different length. It is common to produce several spots from the same shot.

  • 5- Add Final Touches

    The director with the client will go through the entire project and decide what sound effects and musical score to put in the project. Music can play an important part in the advertising model. The director will also make any minor changes to the project that the client requests.
